Addiction, the severe form of a Substance Use Disorder (SUD), is a chronic, relapsing brain disease that is characterized by compulsive substance-seeking and use despite harmful consequences. This can ultimately lead to a change in how the brain functions and are diagnosed by assessing cognitive, behavioral, and psychological symptoms. According to SAMHSA, recovery is a process of change through which people improve their health and wellness, live self-directed lives, and strive to reach their full potential.

People with severe and chronic substance use disorders can, with help, overcome their illness and regain health and social function. There are many pathways to recovery. It is crucial that people seeking recovery are given options in their decision making and are empowered to make the choices best suited to their health and safety with guidance from family and medical providers.One of the biggest challenges people with addiction face is finding help.
